If you have read some of the other pages here on NutriciousDiet.com you know that my wife and I recently altered our diets to the
point that we are now vegans. I never thought of myself as a candidate for veganism - I liked cheese and milk and seafood and eggs
and chicken too much. But after being exposed to the information in The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. and
Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., M.D., I learned that numerous studies have shown that you
can significantly reduce your chance of getting cancer, heart disease, diabetes and more by eating a plant-based diet as opposed
to an animal-based diet.
Well, I fell for it and so far so good (I don't think I have any of the above-named illnesses). I never was a big fruit eater but
the new me likes fruit a lot. I am fortunate to live in Florida, so I have year-round access to a wide variety of fruit. I eat fresh
oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, bananas and watermelon. I buy the Dole frozen blueberries (3.5 oz. bag), thaw them out one bag at a time and
put them on cereal and soy ice cream. Fresh blueberries are too damn expensive and these taste just as good (or better). I can't
stand cantaloupe and never got too interested in apples or grapes, either. I have recently tried sorbet for the first time - it
doesn't have dairy or eggs in it. It's good, too.
Fortunately, a vegan can still drink margaritas. I make my own, from scratch, so I use quite a bit of pure lime juice. The next
time I make a blender full I'll make note of the ingredient quantities and post the recipe here.
